The Patriot’s Pen program is a nationwide youth essay competition
sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. It encourages middle school students
to reflect on patriotism, citizenship, and the contributions of America’s veterans.
The contest is open to students in grades 6–8 who submit a
300–400 word written essay based on this year’s theme:
"What a Veteran Taught Me About America”

- Develop writing and critical‑thinking skills

Eligibility
- Students in grades 6–8 by the October 31 deadline
- Lawful U.S. permanent residents or pending applicants
- Intend to become U.S. citizens at the earliest opportunity
Essay Requirements
- 300–400 word written essay
- Original work by the student
- Based on the 2026–2027 theme
- Typed or neatly handwritten
How the Competition Works
- Post Level: Local judging and awards
- District Level: Post winners advance
- State Level: District winners advance
- National Level: State winners compete for scholarships
