FLAG RETIREMENT

VFW Post 12205 is committed to ensuring that worn, damaged, or unserviceable United States flags are retired with the dignity and respect they deserve. When a flag is no longer fit for display, the U.S. Flag Code specifies that it should be destroyed in a respectful manner, traditionally by burning. Our Post follows this standard and conducts formal flag retirement ceremonies that honor the meaning and symbolism of the American flag.

Community Flag Retirement Drop Boxes

The community may place worn or damaged U.S. flags in any of the designated drop boxes listed below. Flags collected from these boxes are held for proper retirement during a formal flag retirement ceremony, which includes the dignified burning of the flag in accordance with the U.S. Flag Code.

Flag retirement ceremonies are community events that bring together local residents, Scouts, Auxiliary members, and partner organizations. These ceremonies provide an opportunity for the community to participate in the respectful retirement of the American flag and to learn more about the traditions that honor our nation.

If you notice that a collection box is full or overflowing, please email Svc@vfw12205.org so it can be addressed promptly.

What Happens to Collected Flags

Flags placed in the community drop boxes are gathered and stored respectfully until the next scheduled retirement ceremony. During the ceremony, each flag is inspected, prepared, and retired in accordance with long‑standing traditions and the U.S. Flag Code. The process is conducted with solemnity and respect, reflecting the values and sacrifices represented by the American flag.

Why Proper Flag Retirement Matters

The American flag symbolizes our nation’s history, ideals, and the service of those who have defended it. Proper retirement ensures that flags which are no longer suitable for display are not discarded casually, but are honored in a manner befitting their significance. By following the U.S. Flag Code and established ceremonial practices, we preserve the dignity of the flag and the respect it commands.
