The Voice of Democracy program is the VFW’s premier national audio‑essay competition.
High school students record a 3–5 minute audio essay expressing their views on
democracy, freedom, and civic responsibility. The contest is open to
students in grades 9–12.

Eligibility
- Students in grades 9–12 by the October 31 deadline
- Lawful U.S. permanent residents or applicants for permanent residence
- Intend to become U.S. citizens at the earliest opportunity
Audio Essay Requirements
- 3–5 minute recorded audio essay
- Original work by the student
- Based on the 2026–2027 theme
- Typed transcript included
How the Competition Works
- Post Level: Local judging and awards
- District Level: Post winners advance
- State Level: District winners advance
- National Level: State winners compete for scholarships
